Venus Emerging From Behind the Moon Yesterday Through my Telescope.
Yesterday afternoon, two worlds millions of miles apart touched in our sky. As the Moon orbited Earth, it passed in front of the planet Venus in an event known as an “occultation”.
Venus is visible during the daytime with the unaided eye, with no binoculars or telescope needed. The video at the end shows a standard iPhone recording clearly showing the planet next to the crescent Moon.
Venus is 4 times wider than our Moon, but appears much smaller because of its extreme distance — in fact it currently sits on the other side of our Solar System.
I captured these images from my home near Seattle Washington — this rare event was actually visible for practically all of North America.
