Rant: it’s kinda crazy how so many seemingly experienced divers have such little respect for the reef

I was recently on a liveaboard in Palau and was honestly a bit disturbed by how little regard a lot of the divers on my boat had towards the reef.

Now, this wasn’t the first liveaboard I’ve done, but it was definitely one of the most experienced boats I’ve been on in terms of dive count and places been.

For some context, I’m in my late 20s with around 300 dives and was by far the youngest and least experienced, with the majority of the people having 500-1000+ dives under their belt. Some people were dry suit divers or primarily dove in the cold, some had gone all over the world to some really premiere (and difficult) destinations like Indonesia, Cocos, and Galapagos, some had been diving for decades, etc.

I saw really expensive gear like Perdixes and Halcyons, elaborate camera setups, and more. And despite all this, I constantly saw these same divers dive in a 45 degree angle and constantly dragged their feet or kicked around the reef, grabbing things to maintain steady in current, etc.

I get people make mistakes sometimes, we all do, but there would be no reaction, even flinching or recoiling, if they just kicked reef or something. Just a complete disregard for everything around them.

It blows my mind that some people who have been diving for so long, invested so much money into diving, and dove for so much, could just act in this manner.
