Grandma is sick with cancer and the family with her won’t just cook her decent meals
I got the news last week from my dad that my grandma just got diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer after she went into the hospital for blood clots. Doctors are giving her a couple months.
My dad and little brother flew up to visit her this weekend to visit, I’m planning to go this weekend since I have a three day weekend and can stay a little longer. If I can find decent plane tickets that aren’t suddenly 1k, what the fuck happened to airfare all of a sudden?! The price is triple what it was two days ago when I was looking through tickets with my dad. I might have to go next weekend because the prices are a little less crazy.
Anyway, I just got off the phone with my dad about his visit, and it’s making me wish my boss wasn’t on vacation right now so I could take time off and go up to visit longer term.
Apparently my uncle and aunt are the ones mostly “feeding” her. But they are offering her the same prepackaged, microwave, ready meals, preservative, chemical filled crap they eat. And it hurts her stomach, doesn’t taste good, and she wants nothing to do with it. She is now starving to death on top of her cancer. They shrug their shoulders and say she doesn’t want food and they can’t make the 70 year old lady with cancer eat if she doesn’t want to.
But my dad made her actual food using the damn stove and cooktop that’s been in the house for years that my uncle should be fully capable of using since he USED TO RUN HIS OWN CATERING COMPANY AND KNOWS HOW TO COOK SHIT HE JUST DOESN’T. And you know what? My grandma was perfectly happy eating the sautéd asparagus and chicken my dad made. She ate the bacon and eggs he cooked on the stove. She was a little pickier on the veggie soup he made, but I figure it might have been hard on her stomach to have so much fiber rich veggies in one serving after substituting on microwave crap the past couple months. Like none of them have even thought to make her a smoothie with some real fruit and yogurt and see if they can make that easy enough on her stomach.
And now all I want to do is go up there and actually make proper food for her so she can fucking eat. And kick the shit out of the family living in her house ‘taking care of her’ that are really just making her last few months more miserable. Just make the lady some damn food you fucking pricks.
