Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) #RetroReview
Paul Freeman, the British actor who played Dr. Belloq, brings nuance to his character, a complex character playing a villain who has real motivations (those are the best villains). Another more than memorable performance is the one given by John Rhys-Davies, a brilliant performance as Sallah. While old B movies and some thriller and detective series from the 1930s and 1940s were the primary source of inspiration for Lucas, Kasdan to write the Raiders of the Lost Ark script, Spielberg's direction was a bit Furthermore, turning the film into a cinematic encyclopedia so to speak, the film pays tribute and homage to several famous films of the last century. Cinema lovers and connoisseurs will enjoy discovering the nods to film classics such as Casablanca, or the scene that pays tribute to legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.
