Rough climate protection: Mercasol or FluidFilm?
Our 2023 LEAF was treated with Mercasol when it came to Norway, and we paid about 600 USD extra for a proper treatment to make the car last as long as possible.
That's about three years ago now and the rust protection company is asking us to renew the procedure for a fresh 650 USD.
I am a little bit hesitant. Mercasol hardens over time and might even act against rust protection by creating cavities and trapping moisture and minerals. The company doing this says it doesn't harden as much as Tectyl and lasts longer. But I wonder if it's already time to switch to FluidFilm, which I use on all my other cars. It doesn't last nearly as long, but it stays squishy and will just wear off, not posing any new dangers.
Both treatments are expensive, but less so than having to fix underbody rust in a few years time (we drive essentially in salt slush all winter).
What is your take? Is there a universally accepted truth?
