I came across a piece of information in a book that surprised me: "When Voyager 2 flew by Saturn in August 1981 the spacecraft reported that a cloud of gases circling the planet is 300 times hotter than the Sun's corona! This is the hottest spot ever detected in the solar system." Sure enough, it seems this quote was taken from a New York Times article https://www.nytimes.com/1981/10/10/us/saturn-cloud-found-to-contain-a-region-hotter-than-the-sun.html rom 1981. The article goes on to say "Temperatures in the region ranged from 600 million to more than 1 billion degrees Fahrenheit."
If I Google anything like "what's the hottest planet in the solar system" or "is the hottest point in the solar system" or "is the hottest spot on saturn hotter than venus" or "is saturn hotter than the sun" I get some mixed results. Most places say Venus is the hottest planet at 867°F, but that's just based on average surface temperature. I found that the core of Venus is \~8,900°F, the core of Saturn is \~15,000°F https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/pdfs/jss_minibook_from-the-outside-in.pdf up to 21,000°F), the surface of the sun is \~10,000°F, and the core of the sun is \~27,000,000°F. It takes some pretty specific Googling to find out that Saturn can get hotter than Venus. Just asking about hottest temperatures the answer is the Sun or Venus. Some more digging reveals that Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus all emit more heat than they receive from the sun and that all of these planets are thought to have cores hotter than any place on Venus.
Firstly, I'm wondering where the "600 million to more than 1 billion degrees Fahrenheit" quote in the NYT article is coming from. Can someone point me in the right direction? Secondly, what places in our solar system are actually the hottest, in either actual recorded temperature or theoretically? #space
