Gabrielle has passed the Azores and is moving away, the National Hurricane Center said in an update around Friday midday local time. Weather warnings for the islands were lifted.

The storm is forecast to remain at its present strength through Friday and then to weaken over the weekend. It is predicted to reach the coast of mainland Portugal early on Sunday.

Gabrielle was forecast to wait until Sunday. But this morning, she whispered her arrival in cloud-thick silence—no wind, no rain, just a sky heavy with memory and refusal. Aguçadoura listens, even when the bulletins say “all clear.”

Yes it is but "she" didn’t wait for Sunday. By Saturday night, Gabrielle tore through the hush—gusts at 80km/hr, rain like memory that clings and soaks deeper than storms. At 11:30pm, the lights surrendered. Aguçadoura held its breath in blackout until morning repairs stitched the grid back together. Calm returned, but not untouched.
