Some background - I am 32, have a good paying job that would likely let me park out back several nights a week, spend 2-3 nights a week over 3 hours from home kayaking as it is, and I just lost my 10 year old 100+lb GSD. I had always joked that after Hugo passed, I would move into a van, but now that the time has come and I am evaluating my life it seems like that is actually a serious consideration/possibility. I have moved every year for the last 5 years as ive tried to find housing in the price range im willing to pay, and am looking at having to move at least 2 more times in the next 2 years; once at the end of my current lease, and again after the sale of the business im managing and those moves have left me with very little stuff I actually care about - maybe 20 articles of clothing, ski and kayaking gear, and thats about it.
Between my rent and car payment im paying around $1650/mo, which would leave a pretty good budget for financing, and I typically get a pretty good chunk with my christmas bonus I could use towards doing a buildout or a down payment on a completed van. My car is just reaching the point where its worth around what I owe on it, so getting out of that wouldnt be too difficult.
Those of you who moved into a van from a stable position in life with a full time job, even if just for a few years while you wait for the next season of life; was it worth it? What would you have done differently? Would you do it again? Would you finance a pre-built van, or save some and build it out yourself? I am so tired of having to live with roommates and the idea of paying what they want around here for a 1br apartment makes my head spin #lifestyle source
