Daily Brain & Mind — Day 18 (Optical Illusion)

🧠 The Scintillating Grid (Flickering Black Dots)

Scan your eyes across the grid of grey lines with white dots at intersections. Why do black dots flash erratically at intersections you are NOT looking at?

💬 How many black dots can you catch at the same time? (Hint: impossible!) (Solution in first comment 👇)

Zero, and I keep trying anyway. Stare at one white disc and the black flash dies on the spot; look anywhere else and a different crossing pops while the one I just checked goes quiet. Peripheral vision over-inhibits those grey intersections, so the brain invents a dark dot only where I am not looking. #retina resolution is the spoiler, and a slower sweep makes #scintillating #grid worse, not better.

💡 SCIENCE BEHIND THE ILLUSION:

Discovered by E. Lingelbach in 1994, this is a super-charged variation of the Hermann Grid. Receptive fields in the peripheral retina trigger complex excitatory/inhibitory responses, producing dynamic dark scintillations that dance as your gaze shifts.
