Jackie, the Big Bear bald eagle whose nest life drew a vast online audience, died Aug. 10 after treatment for an illness and injuries sustained in conflicts with other eagles. Her death was announced by the Ojai Raptor Center and independently reported by the Associated Press. 🦅
She was found grounded near Fawnskin in mid-July after being absent from the nest. Jackie briefly left intensive care on July 29, but her condition later worsened.
Jackie and her mate, Shadow, became widely known through Friends of Big Bear Valley’s nest cameras near Big Bear Lake in Southern California. The cameras have documented nesting, harsh weather, losses and chick-rearing for years.
The pair’s 2026 first clutch was consumed by ravens, but a replacement clutch produced two eaglets around Easter weekend. Their audience has also helped spur conservation, with supporters raising $1.6 million in under a month for land near the nest. 🌲
