Sunrise Shadows in the Sky
The most important moment of the September equinox in terms of astronomy is the moment when the Sun crosses the Earth's celestial equator in the sky on September 22, 15:44 Turkey time, as it moves towards the Southern Hemisphere on its annual journey. This moment marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and day and night become almost equal around the world. If you celebrate the astronomical change of seasons by watching a sunrise, you can also observe the sun's rays, or crepuscular rays, that occur at dusk when the sun is just above or below the clouds. These rays, which are more visible in the shadows created by clouds, can create an impressive appearance in the sky during any sunrise or sunset. Due to the perspective effect, parallel cloud shadows appear to extend eastward on your horizon and toward the rising Sun on the date of the equinox. But in this magnificent sunrise scene taken in early June, parallel shadows and crepuscular rays appear to converge toward a more northern eastern horizon. In this well-composed image, you can see the rising Sun just behind the bell tower of a church in the town of Vic, in the Catalonia region of Barcelona, Spain.
