My opinion on work gaps and having to explain them
I don’t think asking the question is an issue. The issue is how employers respond or how they’re quick to make assumptions about something they have no right to 100% know about.
If I was an employer interviewing someone who had a work gap, I honestly don’t care whether it’s 4 months, 6 months or a year or longer. I would not care whether it was for a mental break, taking care of a family member, having a baby, or even taking a break and traveling. Many employers don’t like the idea of people (especially young people) taking career breaks to \*gasp\* try and enjoy life a little bit. It’s strange to them because that’s not what they were taught growing up.
I’d actually think of people very fondly who decided to take a risk and to travel the world or just follow their passions or learn a new skill. There’s more to life than work. Who am I to judge for how you were able to support yourself through that break. Who cares?
I admire people who see the world differently like that. It shows they’re independent-thinking and open-minded about unlimited possibilities. source
