A street I never saw again

Greetings.

This story happened to me about two years ago. You see, I used to live in a coastal city, where it's unbearably hot because it's an industrial city and the beaches are on the outskirts, meaning they don't border the city. It's not a tourist destination either; in fact, there's nothing that would particularly attract any tourist. In short, a dreary city. That afternoon, it was around 4:00 PM when I was walking with my partner through the city. We enjoy walking a lot and talking about our goals and dreams and everything that's wrong with the world. We bought two popsicles to quench our thirst and set off. That afternoon, the atmosphere felt incredibly heavy, as if we were carrying a heavy load of stones on our backs. It wasn't hot; it was more of a cool climate because a breeze was blowing and the trees were swaying from side to side. It seemed as if a storm was approaching. We were walking, lost in each other's eyes, and we lost all track of time, place, and space. We went up Aventador Street at 45th, and the highway was surprisingly empty. Few cars were on the road, which is unusual because it's one of the city's main highways. We turned right and went up a steep street that seemed to lead to heaven. Large houses with large gardens and imposing facades adorned the space. Majestic trees, probably the largest I've ever seen in any city, so large that the sun couldn't penetrate their leaves, and it felt like we were walking through a forest.

But that wasn't the strangest thing. My partner checked her phone, and it was only 4:15 PM. We had only been walking for 15 minutes, and the walk felt very long; it was as if time were slowing down. From the moment we entered that street, we didn't see a single person.

We continued on, and now we felt different, younger. We walked two more blocks up, and as we strolled, we moved further away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but also from the place where we had grown up. When the street leveled out, a beautiful avenue appeared in a play of light, lined with palm trees that could reach up to four meters tall. It wasn't just large houses anymore, but mansions, with swimming pools and luxury cars. The sun had set, and the sky had turned violet. We couldn't believe it; we had never seen this street before, even though we knew a large part of the city and this area well because we lived nearby. My partner checked the clock, and it read 4:20 p.m. Only five minutes had passed, yet the walk had felt incredibly long. When we reached the end of that majestic street, we encountered a gentleman dressed in old-fashioned attire. He wore a dark suit, a high-collared shirt underneath, a striking green tie, and a bowler hat—almost a typical old Englishman. The man saw us and smiled, tipped his hat, and said, "Have a good trip, young people." When we crossed the street and turned to look at him, he had vanished. It was impossible for him to disappear so quickly, especially at the pace older people walk, you know what I mean.

The street was still there, but it frightened us; it was as if we knew we would never see it again. And that's exactly what happened. We went back again and again and couldn't find the street, though we did find the others with the enormous trees. But that street, which seemed to belong to no city whatsoever, disappeared. We asked several people—friends, acquaintances, family—but they all said that such a street didn't exist. And we agreed, because we searched for it without success. My partner and I believe we were transported to some other place at that moment, and that's why we'll never find it again. By the way, when we crossed the street, it was already dark; the clock read 7:00 PM, almost two hours since we had last checked the time.

I feel like we were disconnected from everything, as if we had stepped through an invisible portal whose presence we only felt or noticed once we stepped out of it.
