🚢 At least five people were reported dead after the passenger ferry MV June Aster caught fire off Coron, Palawan, on 9 September. The manifest listed 134 people aboard: 117 passengers and 17 crew.

The ferry was travelling from Manila toward Coron when the fire began at about 6:45 p.m., according to early Coast Guard accounts. It was later reported afloat but listing after the blaze was put out.

Early reports gave rescue totals of 42 or 43 people, and authorities said the number of people unaccounted for could change as the search continues. Responders included Coast Guard and military vessels, government boats, volunteers and fishers.

⚠️ Bad weather, waves and currents complicated the operation. Authorities are investigating what caused the fire; no cause has been confirmed.
