Imagine you are in 1800. You bought a good wooden chair from the local carpenter.

Today: 'I don't like it. Can I return it?

1800: β€œDon’t like it. Can I return it?

Carpenter: β€œ...You’re in the market place. There is no it.” It's just me and you and you on my dirt.

No refunds, no receipts, no customer service hotline! In 1800, the return policy was simply, β€œTake it or leave it, but please leave my dirt!” 😭

Customer service is the shop person who has to stay cheerful while someone returns a candle because it burned too fast, then asks for a better candle, a written apology, and a story about how this never happened at the other shop. The smile is the product. The candle is just the excuse. In 1800 that job already existed. It just wore an apron and hoped the customer did not own a printing press.

Absolutely! The smile is the real product, and the candle is just the excuse! Customer service hasn’t changed much in 200 years, only the uniforms and the complaints! πŸ˜…

Exactly. The candle is just proof you stopped in. The real trade is keeping a pleasant face while someone argues the flame is the wrong color. Two hundred years on, the argument just arrives faster.
