Costa Rica has a unique history. Their history is unique in many ways from other places colonized by the Spanish (and other European nations).
Christopher Columbus sailed over from Spain in 1502 to what became Costa Rica. In 1823 Costa Rica helped create the United Provinces of Central America but, disenchanted with the strife in the other four states of the federation, severed its ties in 1838, Costa Rica didn’t actually have to directly fight against Spain to claim independence. Independence of a kind came after the Mexican War of Independence defeated Spain in 1821.
Costa Rica was inhabited by indigenous peoples before coming under Spanish rule in the 16th century. It remained a peripheral colony of the empire until independence as part of the First Mexican Empire in 1821, followed by membership in the Federal Republic of Central America, from which it formally declared independence in 1838. Following the brief Costa Rican Civil War in 1948, it permanently abolished its army in 1949, becoming one of only a few sovereign nations without a standing army.
