Were you invested in Dorothea and Will romance in Middlemarch?
I feel like a lot of the tension and emotional payoff of that book, especially by the end, revolves around you wanting for those two to be together but honestly I never felt any chemistry between them or reason for them to get together.
Another assumption that I think the book have is that a reader would also be against Dorothea and Casaboun marriage and would want Will to "save" her but I also never felt that way, to me they easily could've been a happy couple if they had let go of their idealized ideas about each other and accepted reality. Like it's crazy how Dorothea still hated Casaboun after he gave her all she wanted, to be able to help in his work, just because she got poisoned by Will into believing that Casaboun's work was worthless, even though neither Will nor Dorothea could possibly have any real notion of this. And it was like that for Casaboun too, he continued to hate and resent Dorothea despite getting everything he wanted because of his insecurities. I was rooting way more for them to finally have a real human conversation and start to see each other as people than for Dorothea and Will to get together.
And I may have missed some obvious clues, but I didn't even suspected Dorothea loved Will until she saw him with Rosamond, to me there was no indication she had any personal feeling towards him until that point and it came out of nowhere.
By the end of the book the author focused so much on them and their love story and I just didn't like it at all, especially when there were other more interesting things happening, like Lydgate having to deal with his life falling apart, Fred and Mary relationship with each other and their families, Bulstrode exploding after everything was revealed (I really hopped we had more of the "DO YOU THINK THIS IS BAD, THIS CHICANERY" energy from him), and so on. But no, the ending is basically dedicated exclusively to Will and Dorothea and I just couldn't give a fuck about their love declarations or them having to "sacrifice" themselves by living with only 700 pounds per year.
I don't know, it was just very underwhelming to me. #entertainment
