Gloria Steinem, the American feminist writer, activist and co-founder of Ms. magazine, has died at 92. Her foundation said she died September 2 at her home in New York City. 🕊️
Steinem became one of the most visible voices of the US women’s movement, combining journalism with organizing around gender equality and women’s civil and reproductive rights for more than five decades.
Her undercover 1963 account of working as a Playboy Bunny exposed poor pay and sexist treatment. She later helped found Ms., which brought subjects including abortion, pay equity and domestic violence to a feminist mass readership.
She also helped establish the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Women’s Action Alliance, Voters for Choice, the Ms. Foundation for Women and the Women’s Media Center. President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. ✊
