I feel that the idea of working just to survive is an oxymoron
Apologies in advance this is kind of just a late night stream of conciousness.
Needing to get a job again asap after quitting and focusing extra hard on art and developing new skills for a time because I was not finding any work and I hate feeling like I'm not doing anything. It's been pretty helpful for my mental health, and I have been part of galleries as well as taking commissions, but it's still not sustainable for me.
I don't mind being productive but have only experienced low level jobs (call centre, fast food). I also volunteered, which I loved, but couldn't get hired at that organisation. Again, I do not mind working on my own terms.
If this is all I can get, which is likely in this economy, I am not gonna work full time. I just do not understand the argument that "nobody wants to work" as if it's a choice to not be able to function under objectively messed up socioeconomic conditions. Maybe it's being neurodivergent but I can not imagine being able to just "power through" that feeling?
I genuinely do not value modern living enough to simply "work to survive" and I will end up shutting down in one way or another, because I simply do not care enough. I don't have kids, or many prospects, my survival without any enjoyment of life is fairly meaningless. Survival isn't a motivator if the end reward is prolonged suffering. Even as someone with a myriad of interests, hobbies and skills that aren't passive, when working long hours all these things disappear for me and are replaced by numbness. There is no separating from work. It takes over my entire nervous system.
Personally just planning to work part time on the bare minimum til I find something I can stand or tap out.
But in summary: I don't think everyone has it in them to "work to survive" and I think we need to stop pretending that it's better to just ignore your survival instincts when it comes to working. I don't have a solution but I know that sucking it up is self harm for a lot of people. source
