There are so many threads on the topic of receiving the AB63 form/having to pay back taxes/having to register as a business and I’m grateful because you all helped me with that information. HOWEVER, this entire practice is one big scare tactic and the information they base your amount owed on is largely false or miscategorized to upcharge you.
This is a huge issue affecting thousands of Angelenos, myself included. I just had to pay over $900 in fear of being sent to collections, and my accountant told me I should have only owed $58. (They are now taking over my case and working on a refund.) In my case I owed the base fee for the business license plus late fees plus penalties for four years but had never received a notice in that four years. When I spoke to my accountant she said the bill was formally passed in 2022 and they’ve been so behind on paperwork that many people got notified at the end of 2025.
I called my congresswoman’s office and was redirected to my city councilman’s office — I talked to a rep there and they were shocked at what I told them. They are running it up the ladder and contacting me further. PLEASE contact your city councilmember and tell them about your experience with AB63/the Office of Finance extorting us for years worth of fees and penalties due to their being behind on paperwork. It’s unacceptable.
