The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has reached a sixth province after a man died in Buta, Bas-Uele, following travel from Isiro in Haut-Uele, according to Africa CDC. 🦠
The reported spread adds Bas-Uele to the affected provinces as the outbreak has surpassed 4,500 reported cases and 2,100 deaths, based on government figures released this week. More than 3,400 cases have been recorded in Ituri, where the outbreak was first reported.
Bundibugyo virus causes a form of Ebola disease for which there were no approved vaccines or virus-specific treatments as of August 13. It spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated items; people are generally not infectious before symptoms begin.
WHO declared the outbreak in the DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. Response measures include case detection, isolation and supportive care, 21-day contact monitoring, infection prevention, safe burials and community engagement. ⚕️
