I work for an IT corporation under a government contracted project and I manage the website content for a crucial initiative.
While our company has managed this initiative for the last 10+ years the client flat out refuses to give us control over their (shitass) website. No justification, just a dumb boomer client rep who can't give up the status quo.
To work around this I build mock-ups with careful revisions, label everything, highlight exact click paths and hand it all over so the client webmaster can do the implementation. This wouldn’t be so bad except the webmaster is PAINFULLY bad at her job and will reliably fuck it up every time.
The normal way to handle this would be to hop on a Teams call with her and go through the corrections live. Problem is she doesn't answer my messages. So I have no choice but to send her complex annotated screenshots that she consistently misunderstands or ignores. It's like pulling teeth to get anything completed.
Every once in a while, the client rep has a look at the website and reprimands us for not meeting quality expectations (I had to take a deep breath to type that out). You read that right: I’m not allowed to do the job myself, but I’m still on the hook for the outcome. To make it even better, she has asked us to stop “micromanaging” her employee and bristles if our emails are anything short of deferential. If I’m too clear, I’m “micromanaging.” If I’m too vague, the changes come back wrong. Either way, I'm the problem.
Nothing changes because the company has to keep wooing the client to keep the contract. So we're forced into this impossible no-win situation.
**All this to say: I feel like this is the kind of thing that can go wrong when a government function is outsourced to a private contractor without the public service pieces being properly funded, staffed, and governed. This whole thing is a huge waste of everyone's time and tax dollars. Just another example of why the system is broken.** source
