One thing I’ve always wanted to understand more deeply about chess is this what are we fundamentally trying to achieve on the board?
At the surface level, most openings seem to be guided by the same principles like control the centre, develop your pieces, ensure king safety, and so on. But why are these principles so important and what underlying objective do they serve?
Is chess ultimately about maximizing the activity, coordination of your pieces, creating imbalances, or something else entirely? Beyond the opening principles learned as a beginner, what is the deeper strategic goal that strong players are pursuing throughout a game?
My rating on chess.com is 1560, I’m getting back into chess after a few months again playing it relatively casually with a little study of a few opening like the Queen’s Gambit and friendlier Sicilians #games source
