I will start with this: I am Black and I am not patriotic. In fact, a part of me despises having been born in the US. I was brought up to think I have to be grateful to have been born in the "greatest country on Earth", but being from a family of educators, I was taught early on what it means to be Black in the US and what kind of history my people have with the country. Our history is partially why I left. I have lived in Germany for nearly 15 years and I have made a good life for myself here.
Most of the time the thought of moving back repulses me beyond belief, but I have moments when I believe I am doing my people a disservice by opting out of their bullshit. I think US Americans could use every abled mind it has to pull itself out of this shit we find ourselves in. Part of me still believes the US can be a force for good in the world. Then I think about having to send my children to a US school or that people with bright ideas about the trajectory of the country are often put down, and the thought of returning quickly fades.
Anyone else go through something similar and would like to share? #local source
