Not a Mask

*Augusta Police Department*
*Report # 6111986*
*Date: November 1, 2011*

**The following is an account by the victim, Rob \*\*\*\*\*\*, as recorded by me, Officer \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*, two days after the incident.**

"It all started on Sunday, around 11 PM. I was out at a party with my roommate, Matt. We’d been living together for about 3 months. We weren’t particularly close, but he knew someone who was throwing a Halloween party and insisted I go. He offered to drive, so I figured why not? I threw together a basic costume and went along, hoping it wouldn’t be too crazy.

Matt was wrong about me having a good time. It was too dark, too crowded, too much. I stayed for about an hour, but I went to find him, he was gone. As in he took the car. I wasn’t sure what got into him - I figured maybe he found himself a girl (or a guy, I’m not really sure) and took them back home. The party was still in full swing, so I decided to call an Uber. Or at least, I did before I looked at the price. The house was pretty remote, and the only path back to the main road was away from my apartment. With the out-of-the-way location combined with the added distance of the roundabout route, I found myself staring at a potential triple-digit charge. For a broke college student, that was going to be a real problem.

That’s when I had the idea that started all this. At the time it didn’t seem so bad - it was only a few miles home, and I spend a fair amount of time camping, so I’m no stranger to nature at night. I hesitated at first, but then I thought again about the cost of an Uber, and started the hike.

Everything was fine for about 20 minutes, until I reached a small clearing and something caught my eye. There, in the dim light, was a tall, thin guy. The first thing I noticed was the hair - it looked like he took a bath in Rogaine. He was hunched over, and I assumed he was just some partygoer who got lost. I couldn't clearly make out his face, but I didn’t think I could identify him anyway because he must have been wearing some cheap werewolf mask. Who else has that much facial hair?

I was about to go check on him to see if he was okay, but then I saw a glint of metal in his hand. Thinking it might be a knife, and worried he might be on drugs (it *was* that kind of party, after all), I decided to not risk it and went on my way, trying to be as quiet as possible. About 5 minutes later, I noticed that there were small sounds behind me. I tried to ignore it, telling myself I was hearing things. It kept going, the occasional rustling of leaves or broken twig popping up every minute or so. I risked a glance back and almost had a heart attack when I realized he was about 10 meters behind me, darting from tree to tree.

Officially freaked out, I began to speed up a little, but he kept pace with me. Sensing that he wasn't going away, I broke into a sprint. I was confident that I could outrun most people; I was a track and field athlete in high school. You can imagine my shock when I look back and see my pursuer running on all fours, like a dog, and actually gaining on me. As he - no, *it* \- gets closer, I notice the blood that’s soaked into the matted hair on its face. Somewhere, in the back of my mind, I recognized that I was wrong about the mask. Whatever creature this was, that WAS its face.

Spurred by this realization and fueled by adrenaline, I found a second gear. I ran faster than I’ve ever run before, and I started zig-zagging through the trees, frantically turning as many times as possible in order to throw it off my trail. After what could have been 5 minutes or 30, I dared to slow down and listen for the thing. Hearing nothing but silence, I took a moment to catch my breath and thank my lucky stars.

My relief was short-lived. I had kept my phone’s flashlight on so as not to run into trees or trip over roots, but my best source of light disappeared. My phone was dead, leaving me back in the near-pitch black forest, lit only by the cloud-covered moon. I silently cursed Matt for putting me in this situation. I continued to keep my ears open, taking some time to weigh my options. I knew I was lost, so I had to pick a direction and keep moving. Eventually I’d find the edge of the forest. The way I saw it, I had two options: move as quickly as possible, or move as quietly as possible. Remembering how fast that thing moved on all fours, I opted for the latter.

I’ve never been too good at astronomy, so I had no clue how to navigate using the stars. I guessed at what I thought would be the quickest way back to civilization and began my trek. I crept along, not wanting to draw any attention from that thing, or from any other aggressive wildlife. I did my best to stay in a straight line - I’ve heard the stories of people who go around in circles and I was determined to not repeat their mistakes.

Without my phone and in a stressful situation, I don’t know how long it was before I saw the light. Off in the distance, I began to make out the shape of a small building, one with electricity. I had some hope! I began to pick up the pace, moving as fast as I could without making too much noise.

My hope-induced haste led me to be a little too careless. I suddenly heard a loud snap and felt a searing pain in my left leg. I somehow managed to stifle my scream into my sleeve. Fighting off unconsciousness, I looked down to see a bear trap absolutely crushing my calf, piercing the flesh on both sides of the bone. Honestly, I don’t know how I managed to pry the jaws apart. I must have been running on pure adrenaline at that point. It’s a little fuzzy, but I do remember stumbling over to the shack, heavily favoring my right leg. I limped up to the door, ready to knock and beg for help. Just before I did, I looked into the window.

My heart almost jumped out of my throat. *It* was in there. It was standing upright, its back turned to me, and it was sharpening a knife. *“I was right”* I thought to myself, remembering the glint from earlier.

I have no idea what came over me, but I was suddenly filled with an exhausted determination. I knew I wouldn’t be able to run with my lower leg shredded, and sneaking around would be slow enough that it would surely give the thing time to find me. So I came to a truly insane decision. This time, I had the element of surprise. If I could find an opening, I could kill it.

I waited a few minutes. It finished what it was doing with the knife and loped off on four legs into another room. Doing my best to ignore my screaming leg, I turned the knob of the door and slowly pushed it open, begging it not to creak. I got lucky. I made it in and quickly moved for the knife, keeping an eye on the direction the thing had moved. Grabbing the knife, I snuck towards the door to the other room.

As I got close, the door suddenly burst open and the creature was flying through it, directly at me. In my weakened state it was too easy to knock me over, and the knife fell from my hand. But again, I got lucky. When the beast hit me, the collision knocked it into a table, where it was stunned. I lunged for the knife, turning and plunging the hilt into the creature’s abdomen. It howled in pain, so I stabbed it again. After four or five stabs to the chest, it finally stopped moving. Exhausted, I collapsed and passed out.

I woke up in a pool of blood, both from my leg and its fatal wounds. I mustered the strength to stand. It was still dark, and I knew that getting out of there was priority number one. I moved over to the beast’s body to retrieve the knife. Good Lord, it must have been 8 feet tall and covered in hair. *“No, fur”* I corrected myself, surveying the body. As I did, my eyes drifted to its face. With all the running, hiding, and stabbing, I never had a chance to see what this thing really looked like.

I squinted. Underneath all the matted, bloody hair, there was something…familiar. I thought I recognized its face. *“You’re delirious”*, I told myself. *“You’re in pain and hallucinating.”* But I felt a gnawing dread rising. Somehow, I knew that it wasn’t just in my head. I recognized it.

Suddenly, its body began to shrink, its features changing. I backed away, ready for a fight again. Its wounds did not heal, nor did it reanimate, but it - no, *he* \-  gradually started to look more like a person. The gravity of this was not lost on me. I had killed a person, even if it wasn’t in any human form. Shocked by the transformation, I had almost forgotten that it looked familiar. I had to know, did I know who this was? As I approached him again, I realized I was right. I did know that face. I looked in horror, staring right into his eyes. The cold, lifeless eyes

…of Shia LaBeouf.”
