Southern Pinwheel Galaxy Discovered by French astronomer…

Southern Pinwheel Galaxy

Discovered by French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in February of 1752, just a few months before Benjamin Franklin's famous lightning kite experiment, the "Southern Pinwheel Galaxy" is a *barred spiral galaxy* just like our Milky Way.

Located along the border of the Hydra and Centaurus constellations, this photo shows what M83 looked like around 15 million years ago when back on Earth, the ancestors of humans were just beginning to split away from the ancestors of chimpanzees.

After traveling 15 million lightyears, the photons of light depicted here were captured by a very sophisticated remote astrophotography rig at El Sauce Observatory in Chile.

This is my own processing of the wonderful data from that observatory, publicly available from Dark Matters Astrophotography https://darkmattersastro.com/ . If you'd like to see the full-frame photo in high resolution, have a look at https://app.astrobin.com/i/fzil28
