Snow had been piling up outside, forming a thick new layer of white over everything. My parents were in Hawaii for their honeymoon, while I had been sent out for firewood at seven in the morning because the school routes had been canceled. That meant I was stuck at home all day.
I was sitting in front of my old computer with about six windows open, jumping from one to another just to kill the boredom. Stupid YouTube videos, Flash games, some new website called Instagram, and Facebook.
Facebook was mostly the usual stuff: vacation photos, ridiculous posts, and the occasional creepypasta.
My finger stopped scrolling when I heard the notification sound.
J: "Her again..."
I thought it automatically when I saw the username.
Screamgirl69.
She had liked almost every stupid thing I'd ever posted. Somehow, she'd found all of my social media accounts too.
Whenever I mentioned it to someone, they told me it was cute. That she was probably shy.
I used to think so too.
But every time she messaged me privately, she mentioned something a little more personal.
It was starting to creep me out.
I'd even considered stopping posting altogether until she lost interest.
This time, she sent me a message.
Screamgirl69: "Hey J... what are you doing?"
Honestly, I didn't know whether to threaten her, play along, or become Amish and abandon social media altogether.
This time, I chose another option.
J: "What do you want?"
Screamgirl69: "Uh... what?"
Too direct, I thought.
But I decided to stop taking back what I was thinking. I was tired of this, and it was something we needed to talk about here and now.
J: "What do you want from me? I don't know you, but wherever I go, if it's on the internet, you're there too."
Screamgirl69 is typing...
The message disappeared.
Then it appeared again.
Then disappeared again.
I fucked up, I thought.
My fingers immediately started moving across the keyboard.
J: "Sorry... Look, I don't know you, and you're following me everywhere. I'm really uncomfortable with this."
I crossed my fingers and waited for her answer.
I swear to God, my heart stopped for a moment when the typing notification appeared again.
Screamgirl69: "I'm sorry, John. I didn't know how to approach you, so..."
For a second, I actually felt bad for her.
Then I realized something.
J: "How do you know?"
Screamgirl69: "Know what?"
J: "My name. How do you know my name?"
My breathing practically stopped while I waited.
Screamgirl69: "I follow you everywhere, DUH... Okay, I read it out loud. Yeah, that's really creepy. Sorry again."
I rubbed my eyes and sighed.
J: "Okay... you said you wanted to get closer to me. Where do I know you from?"
Screamgirl69: "School. We both go to Matarife High School. We don't share any classes, but I've seen you around a few times..."
My mind started going through every girl I knew, as well as every girl I'd ever seen around school.
J: "Oh, you're..."
As soon as I sent the message, I opened her profile.
Default avatar.
No posts.
She was only following me.
I went back to the chat.
J: "You're one creepy, mysterious girl. I have no fucking idea who you are."
Screamgirl69: "I'm not creepy! I'm... mysterious and sexy."
J: "You sound like someone who just discovered the concept of hormones."
Screamgirl69: "But you're having fun, aren't you?"
J: "Isn't the guy supposed to make the girl laugh?... Seriously, who are you?"
The tension and fear that had been building inside me slowly faded while I waited for her answer.
Screamgirl69: "Nu-uh. The fun is in the mystery."
J: "Okay, you got me. You're just a shy weirdo. If you want a date, we can meet up, you know?"
Screamgirl69: "Here? In Matarife? During peak snow season?"
I thought carefully about my next words. They were going to decide where this conversation went.
J: "Yeah? I mean, I haven't dated anyone since... well, ever. So I'm open to opportunities."
Screamgirl69: "Good... but not here. I don't really trust the internet."
J: "Because of creepy stalkers?"
Screamgirl69: "Hahaha, NO. I mean... an in-person meeting."
J: "...Uh?"
Screamgirl69: "Sex, John. Sex."
J: "Aaaaah, say it in plain English. I don't get you. But answering your question, absolutely not. I'm not even sure you're a girl."
Screamgirl69: "Oh, come on. It would be so cute. Cold outside, steam in the air, darkness, the smell of pine... me wearing your gray hoodie in the morning."
J: "Are you describing a teenage night of passion or a really weird crime scene?"
I laughed out loud.
Then I reread the message.
The pine air freshener.
The one my mother was obsessed with and had placed all over the house.
J: "You've done it again."
Screamgirl69: "Been sexy and mysterious?"
J: "How do you know what my house smells like? And don't tell me I smell like that or that you saw it in a picture. My family hasn't posted pictures of our house since they took a digital security course. And I shower every damn morning before school."
Screamgirl69: "I've lost your trust, haven't I?"
J: "DUH."
I blocked the user.
For the next five minutes, I sat there at one in the morning, realizing that the only girl who had ever shown any interest in me was a fucking creepy stalker.
Then notification after notification started appearing.
Screamgirl68 started following you.
Screamgirl68 sent you a private message.
Screamgirl68: "John, please, let me explain."
User blocked.
Screamgirl67 started following you.
Screamgirl67 sent you a private message.
Screamgirl67: "John..."
User blocked.
Screamgirl66 started following you.
Screamgirl66 sent you a private message.
Screamgirl66: "John, wait!"
User blocked.
Before I could make my account private, she managed to do it one last time.
Screamgirl65 started following you.
Screamgirl65 sent you a private message.
Screamgirl65: "JOHN MATTHEWS, if you block me again, I'll rip your skin off and wear it as a fucking Halloween costume."
J: "What the fuck do you want from me?!"
Screamgirl65: "I want to love you and have you love me. What's so difficult about that?!"
J: "Who are you?! How do you know so much about me?!"
Screamgirl65: "I told you, John. If you want to know... open the door."
J: "What?"
KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.
The pounding on the front door froze my blood.
I looked out the window, but the snowfall was so heavy that I couldn't see anything except a purple hood.
Screamgirl65: "Be a good boy and open the door. If you behave, maybe you'll even get to make your debut."
J: "You fucking psycho! I already told my dad what's happening. He's getting the gun from the drawer!"
Screamgirl65: "Nu-uh. You're lying to me, John. Why would you do that?... Did you know Facebook recommends accounts to people based on who they follow and whether they live in the same area? We could pretend we're in Hawaii or... I don't know, the Bahamas? I've never been to the beach, so I wouldn't know the difference."
J: "You're fucking insane!"
Screamgirl65: "I didn't want it to come to this... but did you know your mother keeps a spare key under a ceramic frog in the garden?"
I froze.
Screamgirl65: "You didn't, did you? I only saw it by accident once. So... ever since then, whenever I knew you weren't home, I'd sneak inside. I'd watch TV. Sometimes I'd take a bath. Sometimes I'd try on your clothes. Sorry about the black hairs on your hoodie. They fall out sometimes because I don't brush my hair enough."
J: "What do you want? Money? I can give you money, just don't hurt me..."
Screamgirl65: "You, John. I want you."
Screamgirl65: "I'm going upstairs. And the only thing I hope is that you're packing a bag so we can get the hell out of this miserable town. Otherwise, my threats are going to become very real."
Screamgirl65: "Knock."
Screamgirl65: "Knock..."
Screamgirl65: "KNOCK."
The front door slammed open downstairs.
I jumped out of my chair.
I thought faster than I ever had before.
I opened my window and moved the snow around it so it looked like I'd climbed outside.
Then I crawled as far underneath my bed as I could.
I heard the wooden floorboards in the hallway creaking slowly.
A shadow stretched underneath my bedroom door.
Then the door opened.
Someone stepped inside.
She wore purple stockings over thin legs that looked completely out of place beneath a pair of thick black hiking boots.
She walked toward the window and looked outside for a moment before closing it.
Screamgirl65: "I would've believed that if the snow trail didn't stop right in front of your window."
She turned around.
Screamgirl65: "Where are you, John? I just want to talk. We can work this out."
She walked over to my closet with her back turned toward me.
When she opened it, I saw the curved knife in her hand.
The blade was already marked with patches of rust.
She spent a few minutes searching through the clothes.
I couldn't see her face beneath the hood. Only strands of black hair falling around it.
Then she walked past my bed.
Stopped.
Slowly stepped backward.
She looked directly at it.
Screamgirl65: "Hidden in plain sight..."
She walked toward me.
Slowly.
I covered my head with my arms, panic completely taking over my body.
Then she grabbed my left hand.
And intertwined her fingers with mine.
Screamgirl65: "It's okay, John. We're going to be fine."
My breathing stopped completely as I tried to figure out what to do next.
Screamgirl65: "But you didn't open the door."
She squeezed my hand.
Screamgirl65: "And you didn't pack the bag like I told you."
She pulled my arm out from underneath the bed.
I slammed my head against one of the bedposts, but I couldn't get free.
Screamgirl65: "I hope you'll listen next time. I don't want to have to do this every day!"
She grabbed my little finger.
J: "No, no, no, wait! I'm sorry! Please!"
I felt the edge of the blade touch my finger.
\---
Two months later, according to the news, the only evidence they found was my severed finger.
And the messages.
They traced them back to a phone that had been reported stolen almost a year earlier.
