Most Famous Novel out of Morrocco: For Bread Alone by Mohamed Choukri

This is an autobiographical novel known for its controversial content, being published first in a foreign language before the Arabic publication. It describes the author’s childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood in the poverty-ridden communities of northern Morrocco, mostly Tangier and Tetouan. For the entire novel, the author is an illiterate, wayward youth experiencing a lot of suffering and indulging in delinquent behavior. The novel delves into instances of child physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as references to acts of beastiality.

Mohamed Choukri only started writing the novel after he learned how to read and write in his twenties. After the release of the novel, he became something of a household name in Morrocco and a prominent figure in Arab literary circles.
