I believe that Absolute Wonder Woman takes direct inspiration from A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin.
The new adaptation of Wonder Woman depicts her as a witch that uses sorcery as if another limb or sword. When trying to depict magic in writing, it is often difficult to invoke originality without stepping on the pillars that are works by Tolkien or Le Guin or other prominent authors. That being said, there are intentional ways to take inspiration that can either be respectful or come off as plagiarism.
I believe Kelly Thompson took inspiration in a well-done and classy manner. The new Absolute Wonder Woman is a great, powerful and more modern adaptation of a character like Wonder Woman.
Here's the similarities I've noticed:
* >!Both Ged and Diana go on self-discovery journeys, where themes of empathy and growth are vital. Also notable: Sparrowhawk and Diana are both born with great strength. !< * >!Both magic systems hold value in the power of names. Earthsea holds more importance in the power of the names, but it is stated multiple times in AWW that names hold magic value. !< * >!In both stories there's parts where the protagonists get stuck as other creatures, unable to transform back - due to the fact that they "forgot" what their old selves were like. Both were later saved by a supporting character.!< * >!Both Ged and Diana have to face a doppelganger like character. In Ged's case, it's his shadow. In Dianas case, it's her opposite manifested by the world. Both doppelgangers brought out negative emotions from our protagonists. !< * >!Both worlds have a central theme of balance between good and bad; light and dark, and it's integral to both stories and protagonists. !<
I believe that Absolute Wonder Woman takes direct inspiration from A Wizard of EarthSea by Ursula K. Le Guin, and it would track that Kelly Tompson - who stands for many similar ideals as Le Guin - took inspiration (in a very appropriate and tactful way) from such a notable author who fights for similar things as Tompson. #entertainment
