I don’t ride motorcycles but I kind of get why people do
I don’t ride motorcycles and I’m not going to act like I know a lot about them because I really don’t, but I’ve always thought they were cool in a way. Like whenever I see someone riding one, especially if it’s a nice bike and they look like they actually know what they’re doing, I kind of get it. There’s just something about it that looks fun and simple, but also not simple at all. You’re just out there on a bike, going somewhere, no doors, no cage, no big car around you, just riding. That sounds cool but also sounds insane at the same time.
I think that’s the part that makes motorcycles interesting to me. They seem really fun, but they also seem dangerous enough that I don’t know if I would actually want to do it. Like in theory, yeah, I would want to try it. It seems like it would be a cool feeling, especially on a nice day with not too much traffic, just cruising somewhere and feeling more connected to the road or whatever people say. But then I think about other drivers and I’m like yeah maybe not. People can barely drive normal around cars, so the idea of trusting them while I’m on a motorcycle feels kind of crazy.
I also feel like motorcycles are one of those things where people who ride them really get it, and people who don’t ride them just kind of look at it from the outside and say the same few things. Like “that looks cool,” “that looks dangerous,” “I would die,” “how much was it,” “do you need a special license,” stuff like that. I’m probably that person. I don’t really know the difference between all the types of bikes besides the obvious stuff. Some look fast, some look comfortable, some look old school, some look like they belong in a movie, and some look like they would hurt your back after 20 minutes.
I see why people like the freedom part though. Cars are cool, but you’re still sitting inside a box most of the time, stuck in traffic with everyone else. A motorcycle seems like it makes even a normal ride feel more like an actual thing you’re doing. Going to the store in a car is just going to the store. Going to the store on a motorcycle probably feels like a mini event, even if it’s still just to buy toothpaste or something. That’s kind of cool.
But then again, the danger part is always there in the back of my mind. Not even just riding badly, but other people being dumb. Someone not seeing you, someone texting, someone switching lanes weird, random road stuff, gravel, rain, whatever. It feels like on a motorcycle you can do everything right and still get punished because someone else is not paying attention. That’s probably what keeps me from being fully like “yeah I’m definitely doing this.”
I do think if I ever tried it, I’d want to do it the right way. Take a class, wear the gear, start slow, not buy some crazy bike just because it looks cool. I don’t have the ego to pretend I’d be good right away. I’d probably be nervous just getting used to it. I also don’t think I’d want to be one of those people flying through traffic like they have nine extra lives. I’d just want to cruise and feel cool for like 30 minutes then go home alive.
I guess motorcycles are just one of those things that make sense emotionally more than logically. Logically, yeah, a car is safer, more practical, better in bad weather, easier for carrying stuff, and probably less stressful. But motorcycles still have that thing where you look at one and think “yeah I get why someone would want that.” They just have a vibe cars don’t really have.
So yeah I don’t really have some deep point here. I don’t ride, I don’t know a ton about bikes, but I get the appeal. They seem fun, cool, a little scary, probably addicting if you actually get into it, and also maybe something I would want to try someday but not enough that I’m rushing to do it tomorrow. Respect to the people who ride though, because it definitely seems like one of those hobbies where you have to actually pay attention and not be dumb about it.
Maybe one day I’ll take a class or ride a small bike somewhere safe and see if I actually like it. Or maybe I’ll just keep seeing motorcycles on the road and thinking “that looks sick” while also being glad I’m in a car. #motorcycles source
