Poetry and sleep

I’ve been a troubled sleeper for a long while. I struggle to sleep beyond 6 hours and tend to sleep rather restlessly, prone to wild, fantastical dreams and waking up at the faint sounds in the background.

I tend to read at night, after my working hours, before I go to bed. For the last few weeks, I’ve been developing a habit of reading poetry after right before I fall asleep. Thus far, I’ve been reading bits and pieces of Tomas Transtromer, Leonard Cohen, David Berman and Robert Frost. I’ve noticed a remarkable improvement in the quality of my sleep. The dreams aren’t as frantic and my sleep is calmer than ever. My work has been just as hectic (I’m a corporate lawyer) and so has my life in general. But poetry’s been doing wonders for me.

I intend to read Wallace Stevens soon.
