Recently, I overheard this conversation at a CCD .
Two girls, most likely pursuing their bachelor’s, sat at the adjacent table.
Girl 1: You know what? I’ll tell you an awesome riddle. A friend told it to me this morning, and I haven’t been able to solve it.
Girl 2 (amazed): Sure, tell me!
I, too, started listening intently at this point.
Girl 1: Which one weighs more - a ton of metal or a ton of cotton?
Girl 2: One ton of cotton?
Girl 1: YES! How did you figure that out? I answered my friend one ton of metal and he started laughing at me! So, I guess the answer is one ton of cotton.
Girl 2 (with a sense of accomplishment): Obviously, didn’t you study chemistry in school? Metals are tightly packed, leaving very little space between atoms, which is not true for cotton. Therefore, more weight of air in cotton would exceed the weight of metal.
Girl 1: You are so smart! I’ll just message this to my friend. :D
I took my coffee and ran away after listening to this.
