I’m reading Owen Barfield at the moment and he equated having a large mental lexicon with having a much broader sense of consciousness.

cant help but think about how George Orwell worried that a shrinking vocabulary would eventually produce a shrinking range of thought. It is difficult to think a nuanced thought with a blunt language.

You see this literally in 1984 with Newspeak. The goal wasn't just to restrict speech, it was to restrict what was thinkable. No word for a concept makes that concept harder to hold onto.

Orwell made the same point without the fiction in "Politics and the English Language." Vague writing isn't just bad style, it's a sign of vague thinking, and it produces more of it. The two feed each other.
