Sandhill Cranes are quite large, standing 1.0 to 1.2 m (3.2 to 3.9 ft) tall, with a wingspan of 1.8 to 2.0 m (5.9 to 6.5 ft.)
They migrate from Mexico, Florida, Texas, and California to their breeding grounds in Northern Canada, Siberia, Alaska and the Northern US. The first time we saw them, in the spring, in Yellowstone National Park we had no idea what they were. As a joke, we called them Rocky Mountain Emu. In the spring and fall you can hear the flock calling as they ride the air currents high above. If you watch the sky long enough you can see the flock as bright tiny dots when the whole flock turns and the sun reflects off their wings.
