Elden Ring may be the most fun game I've ever hated.
First off, just wanna preface this by saying, I've never been big into RPGs, last one I played was Borderlands 2, and that was over 10 years ago. I have also, never played a game from (which I only just discovered the hard way as of this week) the creators of the Dark Souls games. Which almost made me not want to continue playing. But regardless, I did and I'm still not sure exactly how I feel about it.
I saw the game was on sale and I decided to get it because I heard great things about it for a while now, one of my friends actually got 100% on it (I have even more respect for that now, fucking hell). After 2 hours of playing, I wasn't a fan and it just pissed me off. After a day of playing, I loved exploring the world and slowly learning the basics (when I wasn't getting shitmixed by mini bosses or running from them like a bitch) but outside of that, I wasn't sold on it as a GOTY quality game, I liked it, but kept thinking, how can anyone find this fun. After a week and multiple hours of beginner guides later, I think it may actually be one of the best games I've played in a while... Or the worst... probably... I'm still kind of hovering between those two opinions on an hourly basis.
I don't think I have ever rage quit so much in a game and then went back to it half an hour later like "nah, I am going to beat this fucker" and failing... but eventually, I do beat the fucker!! And damn, is it rewarding, but in saying that, I do think it's a game that should come with a warning for new players to the genre like "WARNING: This game may result in multiple broken controllers and very high levels of frustration. Good luck, you'll need it. LOL!!".
But anyway, I think I've discovered why I have strongly mixed feelings on the game and also why I keep going back. I hate it because the boss fights get progressively more relentless to the point you could have a mental breakdown, but beating the boss fights (even though I've only done a handful so far) feels really good because of that challenge, and it feels like you *really* *REALLY* have to earn that victory.
Again, this is coming from someone who has never played a game like this before, just thought I'd say that one more time, in case I get comments like "you're just bad", "git gud" or "how dare you call my sacred game shit just because you are shit", etc, etc. Chill, I'm just giving my two cents for anyone who was on the fence about getting it for the fear that it was too difficult or overwhelming.
