Two men died in a shooting in what Denver police suspect is a case of road rage, describing a dramatic scene that unfolded on Interstate 25 this afternoon.
Responding officers found the two men with gunshot wounds — one on the shoulder of the road and the other on the offramp of the highway from the northbound lane to West 8th Avenue. Police said the first died on the scene, while the second died in the hospital.
Police said the victims were traveling together in one car and had an altercation with the driver of another vehicle. Police believe the latter shot the two victims. The shooting occurred between West 6th Avenue and West 8th Avenue in the northbound lanes of the highway, police said.
The two cars had stopped in the northbound lane of I-25, directly underneath West 6th Avenue.
One of the victims, who was the passenger in the first car, exited and approached the driver of the other car.
"While the extent of the confrontation between the two is still under investigation, it appears the suspect pulled out a firearm and fatally shot the victim," the police said.
After his companion was shot, the driver of the first car approached the suspect, who began driving away. Police said the second victim grabbed onto the suspect's vehicle. The suspect exited the highway at West 8th Avenue and fired multiple shots, striking the second victim and "causing him to fall from the vehicle."
A Denver police detective happened to be driving on the highway and heard the gunshots. He saw the suspect driving away and followed him. The detective also coordinated with other officers to contact the suspect, who was arrested without incident near West 13th Avenue.
Police identified the suspect as Stephen Long, 25. He is being held on two counts of first-degree murder, police said.
