“I’m an engineer, I don’t have any practical skills…” from a senior engineering manager. Do you feel like this? I was very surprised by this statement. Most engineers I know are excellent at a craft, anything from ceramic tile, model planes, barbecue, music, to car mods. There is some sort of tool use and creative problem solving in the physical world. I’ve built bicycles and bike wheels, done rock climbing and triathlon. I’m the handyman at my wife’s office so fix toilets, locks, and fluorescent fixtures. I rebuilt my washing machine last night to clear a drain pump clog….but I was a technician for a few years so I’m happy to get back on tools. How many people feel like this? (I’ve got plenty of other imposter syndrome problems …can’t do sudoko for instance. I’m a math survivalist. Good with graphs, bad with arithmetic, but somehow thrive with pivot tables of purchase orders.)
