My journey to atheism
When I was a child, I would hear goats screaming during Eid sacrifices, and it really disturbed me. I asked my sister how God could allow the goats to suffer, and she told me that the goats don't actually feel pain because the sacrifice is for God, and God makes sure they don't suffer. But I could hear them screaming, so that explanation never convinced me.

What do you think about Bill Maher?
On one hand, he is publicly atheist and is openly critical of religion. This is indeed valuable in a country like the US. On the other hand, he is an anti-vaxxer and peddles medical misinformation.
Because I am a skeptic first, and really am an atheist because I am a skeptic, I am not a big fan. I would also say that a mildly religious person who is otherwise pro-science is preferable to an anti-science atheist. Better a Kenneth Miller https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_R._Miller than a Bill Maher, IMO.

Sad at the prospect of no afterlife.
I've strong been a strong christian since i was a kid, however recently i went through a really difficult time, which caused me to lose my faith in god. i now lean toward atheism, which of course now i don't believe in the afterlife. i went my whole life believing that i was going to go to heaven and now that thats gone, the idea of no afterlife feels incredibly sad. any advice for moving forward with my life? like how to accept no afterlife. it feels genuinely terrifying to me.
