🗳️ France’s National Rally and allied candidates secured a record 14 seats in the Senate election, enough to form a parliamentary group for the first time.
The result includes nine newly elected National Rally senators, three senators elected in 2023 and two allies from Éric Ciotti’s Union of the Right for the Republic, according to reporting by AFP carried by The Guardian.
📰 🇫🇷 The Senate has 348 members, but only 178 seats were renewed on 27 September. Senators are chosen indirectly by local elected officials, rather than in a nationwide popular vote.
Marine Le Pen called the result a historic victory. Jordan Bardella said the party’s senators would form a group with UDR allies, extending National Rally’s presence in the upper house ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has proposed a National Care Service for England built on NHS-style principles, with social care free at the point of delivery. 🏥
Burnham said the change would need a new way of funding care and that everyone would contribute. He indicated that the system would not simply be funded in the same way as the NHS.
He plans to seek public backing at the next general election, expected in 2029, rather than introduce the reform during the current parliament. The proposal has drawn criticism over the prospect of tax rises and its possible effect on pensioners. 💷
The announcement does not yet set out eligibility, which services would be covered, or the final funding model. Those details will determine how the proposed service would replace or reshape England’s current means-tested social-care system.
Northern Ireland’s Court of Appeal has allowed an Orange Order march through Portadown’s Garvaghy Road after overturning a temporary High Court injunction. ⚖️
The procession was scheduled for 8 am on Sunday and limited to 35 participants, though no route restriction was imposed.
Garvaghy Road is a predominantly nationalist area, and the proposed return route from Drumcree Church has been at the centre of the Drumcree conflict for decades.
The route had been barred for 28 years after earlier disputes brought violence, heavy security operations and damage to community relations. The decision has renewed concern about possible sectarian tension.
The ruling leaves the immediate march able to proceed while the longer-running disagreement over parades and local consent remains unresolved. 🕊️
