🏦 The Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash-rate target from 4.35% to 4.6% on 29 September, its fourth increase of 2026 and the highest setting since 2011.

The bank cited persistent inflation risks, including higher costs linked to the Middle East conflict and the AI investment boom. Governor Michele Bullock said inflation had been too high for most of the past six years.

The higher cash rate is likely to increase costs for borrowers where lenders pass it through to variable mortgages. ABC News estimated beforehand that a full 25-basis-point pass-through would add about A$91 a month to repayments on a A$600,000 loan. 📈

The RBA said the economy was slowing as expected but left open the possibility of further rate rises if needed to return inflation sustainably to its 2–3% target range.

The Monetary Policy Board will continue to assess inflation, economic activity and financial conditions at its scheduled meetings before determining its next move.

🏠 U.S. mortgage rates have risen above 7% for the first time since January 2025. Freddie Mac’s weekly measure put the average 30-year fixed rate at 7.03% on Thursday.

The increase is the fifth straight weekly rise and comes as Treasury yields have climbed. The Guardian reported that the 10-year Treasury yield reached its highest level since July 2007.

Higher borrowing costs add to an already constrained housing market, where limited supply and high prices have made purchases difficult for many households. 📈

The rate is a national benchmark rather than a quote available to every borrower, whose offer can vary with credit, loan terms and property. Markets will now watch Treasury yields, inflation and Federal Reserve policy for signs of where mortgage costs go next. 🏡

📈 The Nasdaq Composite closed at a record 27,244.28 on 22 September, rising 0.45% for its second straight record close. Reuters reported that gains in AI-related chip shares helped drive the technology-heavy index higher.

Micron Technology rose 5% and SanDisk gained nearly 7% as investors continued to focus on demand tied to artificial intelligence. The S&P 500 was essentially flat, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.36%, underscoring mixed trading beyond the Nasdaq.

The move came as oil traded near $100 a barrel and the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield stood around 4.94%. Consumer-facing software and service stocks were less uniform, with some falling amid concern over Meta Platforms’ newly launched AI assistant.

The Nasdaq Composite tracks eligible common-type securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market and is broader than the Nasdaq-100. Its record close highlights how gains in large AI-linked companies can materially affect a market-capitalization-weighted index. 💻
