#About this Black and White Photograph.
#Coomanagh road 1932. #Ireland
This photograph, is of a family, probably captured
with an old # "Brownie Camera"
This family was considered, at this time of being "Well to do"
Owning a mode of transport,
was a statement of stature in the community.
Probaly also owning a bit of land, for 1 cow, who
gave milk, to produce, buttermilk and butter,
chickens, gave eggs and a rooster for the table
at the week-end.
Porridge was their main staple diet,
and home-made whole meal bread,
made in a pot, suspended
on a creel, over an open turf fire.
Bartering was used on a daily basis, in the community,
instead of money, which was scarce.
Harvesting corn, and hay making,
was also done by hand.
Home grown potatoes and garden vegetables,
were in abundance.
Families in Ireland were often large, because
contraception was non existant.
It was against religion and laws of the church.
A family of 5, was a small family. as is the case in this
photograph.
With 2 parents, made 7. in the house,
and would also have 2 grand parents.
Making 9 altogether.
Many families were of 12 to 14 children.
With T .B. many died at quite a young age.
Hence the need for large families to preserve
the species.
Before Cars,
Even before the famous
"Model T Ford" combustion engine Motor car.
There was the humble Donkey and Cart.
If you couldn't afford a Donkey and Cart,
living in Ireland in 1932.
You walked everywhere, often without,
footwear.
In bare feet along dirt roads, Winter and Summer.
In rain, sleet and snow.
It made no difference,
Children walked to school, in their bare feet,
often walking many miles, to school, and many
miles back home.
In the depths of Winter, in the dark.
They were known as #"Hard Times"
