Majunga: Historical and Tourist Pearl Majunga, or Mahajanga, is a port city in northwestern Madagascar, at the mouth of the Betsiboka. Founded around 1700 by Arabs, it was a trading post and the capital of the Sakalava kingdom. Modernized since independence in 1960, it is distinguished by its active port, its giant baobab, its historical monuments and its mosques, the oldest of which is in Mahabibo.
