In the pre-Hispanic cultures of Mexico, the mother occupied a sacred and fundamental place within society. She was considered the foundation of the home, the educator of her children, and a symbol of life, fertility, and the continuity of the people. For many Mesoamerican peoples, motherhood was linked to the creation of the universe and to the power of the earth itself. Among the Mexica, pregnant women were seen as warriors, since childbirth was compared to a battle. If a woman died in childbirth, she was honored with great respect and considered worthy of veneration, just like a warrior fallen in combat. Mothers had the responsibility of teaching their children values, religion, traditions, and trades. From a young age, children learned discipline, respect, and the customs of their community under their mother's guidance. In some cultures, such as the Maya, women even held positions of political and religious power.
