Who is your favorite guitarist? And what are your top songs they’re on?
I’m a lifelong guitar player. Looking to find some new guitarists or some I’ve just under appreciated/never listened to properly. I love mostly all types of rock and will dabble in jazz/pop/funk/rap etc. Goal is to put most recommendations into a bomb playlist.
My current top 5 in no order:
Jimi Hendrix (Spanish Castle Magic, All Along the Watchtower, Voodoo Child)
Bob Weir (Darkstar, Scarlett Begonias, Help on the way/slipknot)
David Glimour (Dark Side of the Moon ((counting the album as one long song)), Fearless, Comfortably Numb, Have a Cigar)
John Mayer (City Love, Do You Know Me, Wheel, Somethings Missing, Who did you think I was?)
Dean DeLeo (stone temple pilots) - trippin on a hole, big bang baby, big empty, vasoline)
HM: Trey Anastasio (Phish) - You Enjoy Myself
UPDATE - see a ton of the usual suspects and the “guitar gods” from the 60s-80s. What more recent guitarists should be here too? I’ll start:
Elliott Smith - Angeles, Say Yes, Needle in the Hay. Much different kind of playing but some of his songs are so intricate and hard to play (he does the chords, melody, and sings at the same damn time).
Minus the Bear (Jake Snider and Dave Knudson) - Pachuca Sunrise, Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse, Drilling, The Fix (Really their 2nd - 4th albums)
John Frusciante - Soul to Squeeze, Give it Away, Scar Tissue, I Like Dirt, Can’t Stop, Snow(love his sound and the way he plays, reminds me of Hendrix and he makes tasteful solos that are memorable. Also shoutout Navarro for the guitar in Aeroplane). I know he has solo albums I’ve been meaning to fully listen to, but the few songs I’ve heard felt boring and my mind wandered away.
These were just a few top of mind, I’ll also shoutout My Morning Jacket, Kurt Vile, Gary Clark Jr, Pete Yorn, Jeff Buckley, Billy Corgan (certified self-obsessed egomaniac but damn do I love their songs), Silversun Pickups, American Football, Death Cab for Cutie, Mars Volta/At The Drive-in/Sparta Dave Matthews, the Police, Bloc Party, Deftones, War on Drugs, and Kings of Convenience (think of a more modern Simon and Garfunkel with beautiful twin acoustic guitar sound and melodies).
Also - I had an emo phase from 2002-2006ish in teen years, so shoutout the guitar sounds of my innocent, naive youth: Brand New, the Used, Thrice, Sunny Day Real Estate, Moneen, Northstar, Boys Night out, Beloved, Alexisonfire, Armor for Sleep, A Static Lullaby, Rufio, the Appleseed Cast, Hey Mercedes, the Fall of Troy, Every Time I Die, the Early November (I want to hear you sad and Every Nights another story), Thursday, Glassjaw, Poison the Well, Stars Hide Fire, Stryder, Recover, Park, Bayside, Coheed and Cambria, Yellowcard, Gatabys American Dream, AFI, RX Bandits, Dance Gavin Dance, Goldfinger, Further Seems Forever, Steel Train (Gypsy Waves and Blown Away), Saves the Day, fine, Taking Back Sunday too.
P.S. - As you can tell I am not a stickler if you want to list more than one guitarist/number of songs you mention. The more the merrier!

Paul Desmond - Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West - 1959
"Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West" ( John Lewis ) is from First Place Again , the second album led by American jazz saxophonist Paul Desmond . The album was recorded in September 1959 and released on the Warner Bros. label. It was the first of five studio albums Desmond recorded with quartets that included guitarist Jim Hall and drummer Connie Kay . Percy Heath , who was Kay's bandmate from the Modern Jazz Quartet , completed the quartet for this album. For most of August 1959, Hall, Heath and Kay had been faculty members at the Lenox School of Jazz music workshop. During that same month, Desmond finished recording Time Out with the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

UB40 - (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You - 1993
" Can't Help Falling in Love " is a song written by Hugo Peretti , Luigi Creatore and George David Weiss and published by Gladys Music, Inc. The melody is based on " Plaisir d'amour ," a popular French love song composed in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini . The song was initially written from the perspective of a woman as "Can't Help Falling in Love with Him" which explains the first and third line ending on "in" rather than words rhyming with "you."
In 1993, British reggae band UB40 covered the original 1961 Elvis Presley recording as the first single from their tenth album, Promises and Lies (1993). The song, renamed " (I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You, " was released on May 10, 1993, by Virgin Records , and eventually climbed to No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, staying there for seven weeks, becoming their fourth and last top-10 hit. It also topped the charts of 11 other countries, including Australia, Austria, the Netherlands, New Zealand (where it was the most successful single of 1993) and the United Kingdom, where it spent two weeks at No. 1.
