The Christian New Year (MCGI)
Did you know that the Members Church of God International (MCGI) celebrates the New Year on a different day? Instead of January 1st, they follow the 1st day of Nisan from the Hebrew calendar. This year, the celebration begins at sunset on March 18, 2026.
Why celebrate on this day?
The Biblical Basis: They follow Exodus 12:2, where God commanded that the month of Abib (or Nisan) should be the "beginning of months" and the "first month of the year" for His people.
When does the day start? Based on Genesis 1:5, a day starts in the evening (at sunset). This means the New Year doesn't wait for midnight (12:00 AM)—it begins exactly at twilight!
How is it celebrated?
Instead of loud fireworks or big parties, it is observed through a Special Thanksgiving of God’s People (SPBB). Members offer songs of praise, give thanks, and listen to the mysteries of the Bible.
What does it mean?
For the community, it’s a time for spiritual renewal. It’s about leaving old mistakes behind and starting fresh with even stronger faith in God.
While they use the January 1st calendar for daily life (the Gregorian calendar), they believe Nisan 1 is the true beginning taught in the Scriptures.
