Freuchen started exploring the Arctic in 1906 when he was only 20.
After discovering the Inuit way of life in Thule, he lived there for 15 years, trading, joining in polar bear hunts, and experiencing extreme Eskimo survival methods while braving the long polar nights.
Freuchen overcame many difficulties during his travels, like severe cold injuries, snow-blindness, and hunger.
Sadly, he lost his first wife to illness in 1921 and even had to cut off his frostbitten toes.
Still, he made a name for himself as a writer and an Arctic movie advisor, even helping write and act in the award-winning movie "Eskimo" in 1933.
In World War II, after fighting against the Germans in Denmark, he was caught and sentenced to death, but he escaped to Sweden and then made it to America.
After his second marriage ended in 1944, Freuchen married his third wife, Dagmar Cohn, a fashion artist in New York.
