For those of you who have been creating digital art for a while, what advice would you give to someone who's just starting out?
I recently started drawing with a graphics tablet, and I have to admit that my first drawing turned out better than I expected. I know I still have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to using programs like Photoshop. Are there any techniques, tools, or habits that helped you improve more quickly? #art source
Why does negative space in nature photography translate so well into graphic design?
Been shooting landscapes on hikes lately and keep noticing how much of what makes a photo work is just empty space doing heavy lifting. A ridge line sitting low in the frame, a single tree against a flat grey sky. It got me thinking about how directly that logic carries over into design work.
When a client asks me to fill things up more, I always struggle to explain why the emptiness is the point. But then I look at something like a strong editorial cover or a minimal poster and the negative space is what gives the eye somewhere to rest before it lands on the thing that actually matters.
What I find interesting is that this connection feels more intuitive after spending time outdoors than after studying design theory. The eye learns it through experience before the brain puts words to it.
Curious if other designers here draw from nondesign sources the same way. Photography, architecture, whatever. There's something about training your eye away from a screen that changes how you see a layout when you come back to it. Not sure if that resonates with anyone else or if I'm just connecting dots that aren't there. #art
A mix of graphite and ink. Messing around with/trying out different pen thickness. I feel like the lines for the body definitely need work and could be thicker. Any suggestions would be great! #art source
I use a “Paperlike” screen cover, which offers more traction than a regular glass cover, but it’s still not as good as actual paper. It’s particularly hard to make wavy lines that aren’t full of tiny wobbles. How do you deal with this? I know there must be some solution, otherwise a lot of the digital art I see wouldn’t be possible. #art
