Tawo-Tawo
The name Tawo-Tawo comes from the Visayan word for “scarecrow” – literally meaning “man-like” or “person-figure”.
The festival celebrates the city’s agricultural roots, especially its rice production. The scarecrow (‘tawo-tawo’) is symbolised as the farmer’s helper in protecting the rice from small birds (called maya) that feed on the ripening grains.
The festival takes place annually in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental, Philippines.
