What happens to your gratitude when the excitement leaves?
I have noticed something about life.
We are really good at being grateful when something new happens.
A new car. A new relationship. A promotion. A new home. Reaching a goal we have been chasing for years.
We feel excited, energized, and grateful.
Then something happens.
It becomes normal.
The car becomes transportation. The promotion becomes work. The house becomes where you live. The accomplishment becomes something you already did.
And suddenly we are looking for the next thing to make us feel alive again.
There is nothing wrong with wanting more. Growth is part of reaching our potential. But I think we make a mistake when our gratitude depends on excitement.
Excitement is temporary energy.
Gratitude can become a way of living.
Excitement might give you the burst of energy to start the race or push you across a finish line. But gratitude gives you energy during all those ordinary miles in between.
That is where most of life actually happens.
So today, instead of asking what you need next to feel excited, look at what has become normal that you once desperately wanted.
Your health. Your relationships. Your home. Your opportunities. Your growth. Even another ordinary morning.
Maybe the goal is not to constantly create another exciting life.
Maybe it is learning to recognize how much of the life you once wanted has already arrived.
