Are You Allowing Yourself to Be Loved?

Have you ever noticed how easy it can be to give someone love, appreciation, encouragement, and compassion, yet how difficult it can be to receive those same things yourself?

I have often wondered why that is.

Someone compliments us, and we immediately dismiss it. Someone tells us how important we are, and we question whether they really mean it. Someone offers to help, and we feel uncomfortable accepting it.

Why?

I believe somewhere along our journey, many of us learned that our worth was something we had to earn.

We started believing we needed to accomplish more, give more, sacrifice more, or become something better before we deserved the love and appreciation of others.

And without realizing it, we created conditions for something that should never have required perfection.

Think about the people you love most. Do you love them because of everything they accomplish? Because they never make mistakes? Because they always meet your expectations?

Of course not.

You love them for who they are.

So why do we struggle to offer ourselves that same compassion?

I have learned that accepting love begins with appreciating the person we are today, while still remaining committed to becoming the person we desire to be tomorrow.

That requires awareness of the stories we tell ourselves, accountability for the beliefs we continue to entertain, and responsibility for how we treat ourselves.

Today, when someone compliments you, simply thank them. When someone offers kindness, receive it. When someone tells you they love you, believe that their feelings can be genuine without needing to prove yourself worthy.

Because love isn't something we should have to continually earn through our accomplishments.

Sometimes the greatest growth comes from finally allowing ourselves to receive what we so freely give others.

Are you listening to understand or to respond?

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself whether the people closest to you feel emotionally safe around you?

Not physically safe, but emotionally safe. Safe enough to express their feelings, share their fears, admit their mistakes, or simply be themselves without worrying about being judged, criticized, or rejected.

Over the years, I have come to understand that loving someone and making them feel emotionally safe are not necessarily the same thing.

We can genuinely love someone while unknowingly creating an environment where they feel they must hide parts of themselves to maintain our approval.

Think about that for a moment.

How often do we listen to someone with the intention of understanding them? Or are we simply waiting for our opportunity to respond, correct, defend, or explain?

I have learned that emotional safety is not created by always agreeing with someone. It is created through acceptance, compassion, empathy, and the willingness to understand another person’s experience without making it about ourselves.

And this requires something many of us struggle with. Awareness of our own emotional reactions.

When someone shares something uncomfortable, do we become reactive? Do we make them regret opening up? Or do we create the space for an honest conversation?

We cannot control what another person thinks or feels. But we certainly influence how comfortable they feel being their True Self in our presence.

Today, pay attention to how you respond when someone opens up to you. Listen without interrupting. Seek understanding before offering advice.

Because sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person is the freedom to be themselves without fear of losing our love or acceptance.
